The Memphis Grizzlies are baffling.
For many years, they’ve outperformed their inherent metrics because their grit-and-grind style enabled them to win close games more often than other squads. That devotion to defensive excellence and physical play became synonymous with those Beale Street residents.
However, what happens now?
Zach Randolph and vince Carter have defected into the Sacramento Kings. Tony Allen and JaMychal Green remain free agents, and there’s no telling whether they will return to their old stomping grounds for 2017-18. The roster feels more than it has in previous decades, depleted.
And yet, Mike Conley and Marc Gasol are still current. Provided that the group’s two greatest players stay in precisely the exact same uniform, they will be undeniably competitive on the two ends of the ground. Each deserves to be in the All-Star mix season in and year out, and they’ve taken over because the Grizzlies’ authentic leaders.
With the Western Conference improving, is that enough? Can Memphis supplement both stars’ efforts?
Betting on the Grizzlies falling completely from the playoff conversation would be absurd, wherever they wind up at the Western hierarchy. But the odds seem this time around.
